According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, foreign investors invested USD 3.763 billion to the economy of Ukraine in 2015. At the same time, outflow of direct foreign investment (share capital) from Ukraine amounted to USD 891.3 million.

The State Statistics Service of Ukraine concluded that decrease of direct foreign investment in 2015 was due to weakening of UAH against USD.

According to the available data, parties from 134 countries contributed to direct foreign investment to Ukraine. Interestingly, investment from the Russian Federation increased from USD 2.7 billion to USD 3.4 billion (or from 5.9% to 7.8%).

Overall, since the date of its independence, Ukraine has managed to attract USD 43.371 billion of direct foreign investment. Notably, 76.2% of all foreign investment came from the EU Member States. This amounts to over USD 33 billion.

The top-10 countries, from which direct foreign investment was attracted, are: Cyprus (USD 11.744 billion), the Netherlands (USD 5.61 billion), Germany (USD 5.414 billion), the Russian Federation (USD 3.392 billion) Austria (USD 2.402 billion), the United Kingdom (USD 1.852 billion), the Virgin Isles (USD 1.798 billion), France (USD 1,528 billion), Switzerland (USD 1.364 billion) and Italy (USD 972.4 billion). Investment from these countries amounts to 83% of overall amount of foreign direct investment to Ukraine.

The volume of direct foreign investment by Ukraine to other countries as of the end of 2015 amounted to USD 6.4 billion. By far the main destination of such investment is Cyprus (93.7%).

We note that previously the State Statistics Service of Ukraine announced that Ukraine’s trade balance was positive and amounted to USD 632 million. We note that last year Ukraine ended up with negative trade balance in amount of USD 527 million. The last time Ukraine ended up the year with positive trade balance in 2010.

  1. A prominent role of Cyprus as a source of investment capital in Ukrainian economy raises the question of the origin of that capital. Cyprus serves as a safe transit point for capital outflow from Russia and Belarus. It would be useful to trace the homelands of such foreign investors.
